ATSDR Summary

The mission of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), as an agency of the Public Health Service in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is to prevent exposure and adverse human health effects and diminished quality of life associated with exposure to hazardous substances from waste sites, unplanned releases, and other sources of pollution present in the environment.

ATSDR is directed by congressional mandate to perform specific functions concerning the effect on public health of hazardous substances in the environment. These functions include public health assessments of waste sites, health consultations concerning specific hazardous substances, health surveillance and registries, response to emergency releases of hazardous substances, applied research in support of public health assessments, information development and dissemination, and education and training concerning hazardous substances.

ATSDR's mission and the goals of ATSDR are reflected within its organizational structure and its statement of values.

ATSDR Datasets/Resources

HazDat, ATSDR's Hazardous Substance Release/Health Effects Database, is the scientific and administrative database developed to provide access to information on the release of hazardous substances from Superfund sites or from emergency events and on the effects of hazardous substances on the health of human populations.

ToxFAQs are short, easy-to-read summaries about hazardous substances that have been excerpted from the ATSDR Toxicological Profiles.

Public Health Statement Text Search enables the World-Wide Web user to search for specific words or combination of words occurring in ATSDR's Public Health Statements. Taken from the Toxicological Profiles, the Public Health Statements offer easy-to-read summaries of many hazardous substances to which people might be exposed.

Congressional Testimony of ATSDR staff.

Datasets from other organizations containing environmental, earth science, and global change information can be located through the Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) Catalog Services.

Related Organizations and Internet Resources

As an agency of the Public Health Service within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, ATSDR works closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is also concerned with the same sites at which ATSDR performs health assessments.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) maintains an index with links to Earth and Environmental Science network resources, including CIESIN.

NASA maintains a similar index with links to Federal government network resources.

U.S. Government Information by Organization is maintained by the Federal Information Exchange, Inc.

U.S. Government Information by Subject can be found at FedWorld, operated by the National Technical Information Service (NTIS).

Dr. Charlie Xintaras, Office of the Associate Administrator for Science, has been exploring the Internet for environmental health information resources relevant to the work of ATSDR scientists and has made them available in "Science Corner at ATSDR".
