LAN2LAN for ISDN

Introduction

Cisco Systems demonstrates its commitment to the European Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) remote access market by adding two new ISDN products to the LAN2LAN(tm) family, LAN2LAN Enterprise(tm) for ISDN and LAN2LAN Remote Office(tm) for ISDN. These new products are based on proven Cisco PC-software router technology and provide scalable multiprotocol routing support and flexible wide-area connectivity for a variety of applications. This routing functionality provides the capabilities for custom solutions, scaled to customers' current needs, yet expandable to their future needs.

LAN2LAN for ISDN is a PC-based software router featuring integrated ISDN communications hardware integrated into your PC. This ISDN communications hardware, the ISDN Network Interface Card (INIC), is available in Basic Rate Interface (BRI) and four-port Basic Rate Interface (4-BRI) configurations. LAN2LAN for ISDN supports IP and IPX routing and bridging over ISDN connections, with special software features to allow automatic dial-on-demand routing (DDR), bandwidth on demand, maintenance of virtual host-client connections, and data compression. LAN2LAN for ISDN can easily be upgraded to support leased line, X.25, and Frame Relay WAN connections.

Features at a Glance

Benefits Summary

Dial-on-Demand Routing

When ISDN is used as the primary communication technology, LAN2LAN performs DDR. When using DDR, users automatically trigger the ISDN connections when there is data to send. During periods of inactivity, the ISDN connection is disconnected and no charges are incurred. LAN2LAN for ISDN achieves DDR by performing intelligent spoofing and filtering to ensure that periodic maintenance packets, such as network broadcasts, do not cause the ISDN line to become active.

Bandwidth on Demand

LAN2LAN for ISDN supports bandwidth on demand. With this feature, multiple simultaneous B-channel calls are placed to a single destination when higher bandwidth is required. As traffic levels increase beyond a preset usage level, additional calls are initiated. As traffic levels decline, underutilized calls are terminated. The result: users specify acceptable network response times, and LAN2LAN automatically optimizes bandwidth usage.

As a result, users get acceptable network response times and only pay for the bandwidth required.

ISDN Backup

ISDN is often used as a backup technology to leased line services. Organizations that require a WAN service for long periods of the work day will normally choose a leased line as a primary link. ISDN circuit-switched services provide a cost-effective backup method if the primary link fails. When the leased line service is functional, LAN2LAN can be configured to use the bandwidth on demand feature with ISDN to provide additional bandwidth.

ISDN Security Features

LAN2LAN for ISDN provides Calling Line Identification and the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) to ensure a secure internetwork. Using Calling Line Identification, LAN2LAN checks the ISDN number of the calling device and verifies whether it is authorized. If the number is not authorized, the call is rejected and no charges are incurred by the calling party. This security feature can be enhanced with CHAP where encrypted passwords are exchanged before enabling data transfer.

LAN2LAN for ISDN Product Information

Each LAN2LAN router includes a WAN adapter. LAN2LAN Remote Office and LAN2LAN Remote Office for ISDN can only use one WAN adapter.

LAN2LAN Remote Office for ISDN and LAN2LAN Enterprise for ISDN include an ISDN Network Interface Card (INIC) adapter.

LAN2LAN Remote Office and LAN2LAN Enterprise include a Wide-Area Network Interface Coprocessor (WNIC(tm)) adapter.

WAN adapters can be added to LAN2LAN Enterprise products to provide additional functionality. The adapters can be added to LAN2LAN Remote Office products only after upgrading the software to LAN2LAN Enterprise.

The WNIC supports PPP, X.25, and Frame Relay WAN protocols. The INIC is an integrated ISDN adapter; therefore, it only supports ISDN.
