The Heard Museum
The Heard Museum
Welcome to the Heard Museum, a private, non-profit museum whose mission is to
promote appreciation and respect for native people and their cultural heritage.
The Museum was founded in 1929 by Dwight B. and Maie Bartlett Heard as a place to house
and share their personal collections of artifacts and art gathered from
around the world. The Heard Museum marks its 65th anniversary in 1994.
The mission and philosophy of The Heard is much the same: to promote
appreciation and respect for native people and their cultural heritage,
with emphasis on the traditional cultures of the Greater Southwest and on the
evolving Native American Fine Art Movement.
Over the years the Museum has grown in size and today boasts a collection
of more than 30,000 works of art and artifacts, 45,000 pieces of archival
materials including significant papers, books, and photographs, and a
membership of nearly 5,000. Many of these members have given support to
the Museum for more than 25 years. Thank you for keeping the Museum a part of your tradition!
