RidgeNET is a Community and Economic Development project of the Ridgecrest Redevelopment Agency of the city of Ridgecrest, CA. The initial purpose of RidgeNET is to provide an Internet connectivity option to all members of our rural desert community. RidgeNET's own connection to the internet is provided via technology transfer from the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division at China Lake, CA. The City of Ridgecrest and the U.S. Navy have executed a memorandum of understanding to foster technology transfer within our community. To this end, the Navy has established a Tech Transfer Office to work specificly on this issue. Donations or grants from Apple Computer,Boeing Information Services, Hayden Books, The Kern County Air Pollution Control Board, and Volunteer Enthusiast Citizens have helped in part to fund the startup of this community project. In addition, we would be remiss if we didn't thank the folks at Cal Tech for providing RidgeNET with its USENET newsfeed. With the grand opening of RidgeNET on October 13, 1994, the Ridgecrest Redevelopment Agency believes that it has not only brought an on-ramp to the information super highway to Ridgecrest, but also an on-ramp to a brighter economic and educational future for Ridgecrest as well.
