Tahoe Skiing Winds Down for Summer
The Tahoe season is on its last legs, with only a few more weeks to go until the most dedicated ski resorts finally call it quits until next November. On the North Shore, Alpine and Squaw still have lifts running daily to the upper mountain, where the base is still very deep and skiable, measuring in at the 15-foot range on the average. South of Tahoe, Mammoth still runs its gondolas and has some ski school instructors available for private lessons. The surprise for some: last Wednesday, skiers found fresh powder when a freak spring storm blew in and dropped six inches. That's the way this whole spring has gone.

- Current Snow Depth*: 8-15 ft., Surface Conditions*: MG, S
- Adult, all-day lift ticket, weekends: $34, Hours: 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.
- Skiers only here, but you can get some extended season action here without lift lines or snowboarders. The best idea is to arrive early and ski with the sun, avoiding the softening base at the lodge until the last possible minute, when you call it quits and have a beer on the deck. Weekends, you'll find live music and fun with other die-hards who are enjoying spring corn and the somewhat unpredictable weather. Last day: Fourth of July!
