New Norcia Heritage Trail
HERITAGE TRAIL
Towards the end of a particularly dry, hot summer in 1846, a small band of
Benedictine monks arrived in the Victoria Plains to establish a mission to the
region's Aborigines. They could not have known that the primitive bush chapel
they built would grow to become the focal point of a pastoral empire in the 1880s
and a monastic and educational centre in the 20th Century.
The New Norcia Heritage Trail traces the development of this settlement, starting
at the New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery. The trail is 2km long (with an optional
1.7km river walk) and is suitable for all walkers. You should allow a leisurely 2
to 3 hours to explore this unique Australian town.
