Welcome to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC-CH

NEW FOR FALL 1995

NEW COURSES FROM THE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION

JOMC 97 is normally an independent reading and research project by one student with one teacher. For fall 1995, however, the School will offer two special topic courses under the JOMC 97 number.

JOMC 97.54. Exploring the Visual World, will be a survey of visual communication tools, techniques and theories and how they may be used in all areas of mass media, present and future. Students will expand their visual awareness and develop a greater understanding of the visual communication process. Through readings, lectures and observations, students will learn how to evaluate various media presentations and choose appropriate methods of information display. This course will be useful for students considering a JOMC major. The course will be taught by Professor Mike Williams. Counts as a JOMC elective. Not open to students who have completed a graphics course in the School.

JOMC 97.55. Electronic Information Sources, will introduce students to essential electronic information sources (Internet, CD-ROM, commercial databases, World Wide Web and others) useful for all sequences in the School. This is the precursor to a course that will soon be required for all JOMC majors. It's a must for learning how to drive and navigate on the Information Superhighway. In addition to the lecture and demonstration section listed on the schedule, students must also come to the School office to sign up for a two-hour lab section. The course will be taught by Professor Deb Aikat, who will join the faculty in the fall. He has taught a similar course at Ohio University. Counts as a JOMC elective.
