How mediation works
Instead of going to court, fighting or giving up when you have a dispute, call us at
571-0367 and explain your problem. If you decide to request our service, a trained
mediator (impartial person) will contact you and the other participants to arrange a
face-to-face meeting at a convenient time and place.
At the meeting, a panel of mediators will listen to both sides of the issue. They will
not take sides but they will assist you and the other person(s) in finding a mutually
satisfactory solution to your concern. Everything said in the mediation is confidential.
When an agreement is reached, it is written down by a mediator and signed by all
parties. Although it does not have the force of law, a mediation agreement almost
always lasts because the signers developed it themselves.
Why try mediation?
- It works! 80% of disputes brought to mediatioin are settled. 90% of mediation agreements
are upheld.
- It's fast and convenient - sessions last about two hours and are scheduled to meet your
needs.
- You avoid the costs and delays of the court system. In court, a decision is handed
down by a judge or jury. In mediation, participants work out their own agreement.
- It does not prevent you from using the courts. Even if you have already started legal
action, you may try mediation before your hearing. If no agreement is reached, you may
continue with your legal action.
- It is private - all meetings and records are confidential.
- It increases communication, promotes understanding, builds a stronger community.
- It offers a better way to resolve disputes than doing nothing, getting frustrated and angry,
calling the police or suing.

The Peninsula conflict Resolution Center (PCRC) has been serving people in San Mateo County
since 1986. PCRC provides free conflict resolution services to a number of Peninsula residents

In addition to providing conflict resolution services, PCRC offeres conflict resolution trainings for
educators, parents and students from kindergarten through twelfth grade in San Mateo County
School Districts.
We also publish a quarterly newsletter for donors, volunteers and interested citizens.
