City Council hires firm to study local transportation needs

by Sherri Walker

The Avalon City Council is once again working on the city's transportation needs, but this time they've got a little help. The help comes in the form of a $980,000 Metropolitan Transportation Authority grant and a consulting firm paid for through the grant. "Mainly we've spent time talking to the community," said Fred Silverberg of P & D Consulting. Silverberg addressed the council as part of a public hearing on transportation needs. Areas of concern that Silverberg said he's chronicled include the high cost to go to the Interior, the lack of a lift-equipped taxi cab and the cost of the Avalon Rapid Transit taxi subsidy to the city. City Manger Rob Clark said the ART program would probably be changed from its present ride-based subsidy. Options include a subsidy for a fixed number of hours or a scheduled route of service, which would make the program accessible to visitors. "People need to be thinking about these things," Clark said. In other action, council:

Sea-dooing it

Hundreds of personal watercraft enthusiasts will be doing it next weekend. What they'll be doing is riding their Sea Doos across the channel as part of SeaBlast '95. The second annual event is expected to raise about $8,000 for the Red Cross, according to Bonnie Alva of Bert's Sea Doo, the event's organizer. Between 150 and 200 watercraft are expected to participate, including one from Texas and two from Utah. The riders will leave Long Beach Saturday morning and begin arriving in Avalon between 9 and 10 a.m. They'll spend the night in Avalon before riding back the next morning. Destination: Catalina is handling the Island-side organization. Owner Gary Thomas says SeaBlast will attract at least another 100 people to the Island. "Some will ride along with them, some will ride on one of the cross channel carriers," Thomas says.
