University of Florida's Perl Archive

Welcome to the University of Florida, CIS, Perl Archive World Wide Web page. We are currently under construction, so be wary of falling source code. If you see a camel or a llama wander by, they are probably carting materials to be integrated.

What is Perl?

"Perl" stands for the Practical Extraction and Report Language and was written by Larry Wall at Netlabs (lwall@netlabs.com). After numerous years, Perl is now embarking into its fifth generation (known as Perl5), and is still being maintained and developed by Larry. The old generation of Perl, Perl4, is currently seeking a maintainer, as Larry is too busy with the newest version.

Perl is an interpreted scripting language optimized for generating reports gleaned from text files. It is also a good language for almost any kind of shell scripting. It combines the best feature of C, sed, awk and sh, while avoiding most of the limitations of those. It has been ported to most major operating systems, including all versions of Unix, VMS, DOS, and System 7.

These options are now available through this web page:
