"Perl" stands for the
Practical Extraction and Report Language
and was written by Larry Wall at Netlabs (lwall@netlabs.com). After
numerous years, Perl is now embarking into its fifth generation (known as
Perl5), and is still being maintained and developed by Larry. The old
generation of Perl, Perl4, is currently seeking a maintainer, as Larry is
too busy with the newest version.
Perl is an interpreted scripting language optimized for generating reports
gleaned from text files. It is also a good language for almost any kind of
shell scripting. It combines the best feature of C, sed, awk and
sh, while avoiding most of the limitations of those. It has been
ported to most major operating systems, including all versions of Unix,
VMS, DOS, and System 7.
