A new restaurant has opened in San Francisco, on the corner of 9th Street and Folsom (where the Limbo and Billboard used to be).
This restaurant, the "ICON Byte Bar & Grill" is run by Joegh Bullock and Marcia Crosby, the main folks behind the Climate Theatre .
When Marcia & Joegh came to me with the idea for this restaurant in the Spring of 1994, they described wanting to have a place that had a strong techno/cyber feel to it and also *very comfortable* - a warm friendly place to eat really good food, not a spiked-chrome-the-future-hurts place.
And they wanted to have Full Internet Access in the restaurant.
Well, months later and many strange events have passed, but it is a done deal now and the place is open.
We have installed a dedicated Internet connection (low speed -14.4K, but hey it's a start :-) and a Macintosh running Mosaic etc. ("we" is Internet Literacy Consultants ) This is all at a table in the middle of the restaurant and is available to customers to use. At some point there may be a rental fee for the keyboard, (like you leave your drivers license at the bar and pay $6/hr or something) but at present it is part of the meal :-)
I'm asking netheads and other curious people to come by and play with it - and leave feedback. There will be a notebook at the table to write stuff down, and/or you can send me e-mail. (The restaurants' e-mail address is: icon@bytebar.com )
Sometimes the video gets routed to a video projector, so whatever you are doing will be on the wall, 5 feet wide.
I'm working on a VERY BASIC and VERY READABLE cheat-sheet that will be laminated and hung by the table, saying things like "Please be patient - if the little thing is spinning, don't click all over the place :-)".
We are building a home page that has pointers to cool stuff and we have a very interesting "hotlist" installed.
And the food is really really good.
This is a interesting new opportunity to bring network communications into everyday life, a little bit further.
So, y'all come by now.
