Grotesque in art
Horror, fantasy, and the grotesque in art
This is an exhibit of visual art that exposes and explores various
artists' treatments of the principle anxieties of modern man. The
graphically violent content is intended for mature audiences.
A great supplement to images in this compilation is:
Schiff, Gert, Images of Horror and Fantasy, Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York, New York, 1978
Some useful technical info:
Each section contains three to six inlined images, each 20-90K. (most
are under 50K) (Currently, there are no pics in "sex", and only
one in war) Click on the image to receive a 20-130K JPEG version.
Each inlined image is 195 pels across. Each linked image is almost
always 800 pels across, or 600 pels down, whichever makes it
smaller. You can also search an index, which
has no inlined images. The scans were done on a Macintosh, and look great if you've got MacMosaic with "thousands" or "millions" of colors. If you're on another system (esp. Sparcstations), you'll have to worry about gamma correction. And try this page on H.R.Giger.
