A list of some astronomical anonymous ftp servers is available.
An index page gives a catalog of the main astronomical resources on Internet.
You should have a look at Skylink, the amateur astronomy www server of France.

Bad news: There is a limited quota on the number of users connected in the same time: so, sometimes, it's possible you aren't be able to retrieve images.
Good news: This server (a Sparc Station 2) is now entirely dedicated to Web, Ftp & Gopher and the horrible NFS mounting has gone out ! Moreover, the storage is done on magnetical disks (quicker than the previous ones which were optical). So the speed access has been very increased !
