More about Speakers:
John S. Quarterman is a partner in Texas Internet Consulting (TIC), which
consults in networks and open systems, with particular emphasis on
TCP/IP networks, UNIX systems and standards. He wrote "Notable
Computer Networks," CACM, October 1986 and the book, The Matrix:
Computer Networks and Conferencing Systems Worldwide, Digital Press,
1990. He is a co-author of the books, The Design and Implementation of
the 4.3BSD UNIX Operating System, 1989, UNIX, POSIX, and Open
Systems: The Open Standards Puzzle, 1993, Practical Internetworking
with TCP/IP and UNIX, 1993, and The Internet Connection: System
Connectivity and Configuration, 1994, all from Addison-Wesley. He is
Secretary of Matrix Information and Directory Services, Inc., (MIDS) of
Austin, which publishes Matrix News, a monthly newsletter about issues
that cross network, geographic, and political boundaries, and Matrix Maps
Quarterly; he is the editor of both MIDS publications.

Andrew B. Whinston is the Hugh Roy Cullen Centennial Chair in
Business Administration, Professor of Information Systems, Computer
Science and Economics, Jon Newton Centennial IC2 Fellow and Director
of the Center for Information Systems Management. He is editor of the
journals Decision Support Systems and Organizational Computing and co-
author or co-editor of 15 books and over 250 articles. Recent research
interests are Internet pricing and application of client-server computing
especially to support groups working collaboratively.

Sury Ravindran is a doctoral student in the second year of the Information
systems (IS) Ph.D. program, and an Assistant Instructor at the Graduate
School of Business of the University of Texas at Austin. His current
research interests include processes for information sharing in
organizations, and optimal use of networking technology for supplier
selection.

Thomas E. Stone is the Senior Editor responsible for signing, developing
and publishing new titles in Computer Science. His focus is on advanced
undergraduate and graduate texts in Operating Systems, Networking,
Programming Languages, and Theoretical Computer Science. He also
publishes for the Professional and Reference market in those areas. A key
series, launched in 1992, is the Unix and Open Systems Series.

Dennis Arnon has been a Member of the Research Staff at Xerox Palo
Alto Research Center for ten years. He is currently President of the
Northern California SGML User's Group. His interests are document and
information management. He received his Ph.D.in Computer Science
from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1981.

Edward A. Cavazos is a Houston attorney specializing in on-line legal
issues. He currently sits on the board of directors of Electronic Frontiers
Houston, a non-profit group devoted to educating the public about the
social and legal implications of telecommunications. He is also the co-
author of an upcoming book entitled, "Cyberspace & the Law: Your
Rights and Duties in the On-Line World." (MIT Press Summer, 1994).

Daniel L. Appelman practices computer and telecommunications law in
the Palo Alto office of Heller, Ehrman, White and McAuliffe. He received
his law degree from the UCLA School of Law in 1981, has a doctorate in
telecommunications and teaches courses on telecommunications law and
regulation. His clients include internet service providers such as UUNET
Technologies and O'Reilly & Associates, computer software developers
such as InterCon Systems Corporation and Cygnus Support and others
working in the areas where the computer and telecommunications
industries intersect.

Brewster Kahle is President of Wide Area Information Servers, Inc.
Inventor and architect of the WAIS electronic publishing system, he has
lead the multi-company effort to build a practical system for end-users to
find and retrieve information from servers worldwide. Before this work,
he helped design and build parallel supercomputers at Thinking Machines
Corporation, and was educated at MIT in Computer Science and Artificial
Intelligence.

Peter Deutsch is one the architects of the archie information system and an
active developer of Internet tools and services. He is President of Bunyip
Information Systems Inc. of Montreal, a company specializing in new
Internet services and has been on the Internet since 1987, when he helped
bring the first link into Eastern Canada. Mr. Deutsch holds an M.Sc. in
Computer Science and a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Computer Science
from McGill University.

Laura Fillmore is President of Editorial Inc./Online BookStore (OBS) in
Rockport, Massachusetts. Her career in publishing started at "The
American Journal of Ancient History" (Harvard University) in 1976, and
her experience in bookselling started at Schoenhof's Foreign Books in
Cambridge, Massachusetts. After four years at Little, Brown & Company
in the Trade Editorial Department, she started Editorial Inc., a book
production company and literary agency, in 1982. OBS distributed its first
book on the Internet, The Internet Companion, by Tracy LaQuey, in 1992.

Bruce Speyer joined the Microelectronic and Computer Technology
Corporation (MCC) in 1989. Currently, Mr. Speyer is the MCC project
manager for TEXAS-ONE, a project with the Texas Department of
Commerce to interconnect manufacturers, state agencies and others across
Texas for electronic commerce. Also, Mr. Speyer is co-developer of the
EINet Galaxy, a directory service for locating and accessing Internet-based
resources. He has a BS and MS in Computer Engineering from
Washington University, St. Louis.(1980).

Ravi Kalakota is a doctoral candidate in Information Systems at the
University of Texas at Austin. He is also a Research Associate at the
Center for Information Systems Management. His recent research
interests are organizational problem-solving in manufacturing and
customer service, and effective creation, dissemination and manipulation
of information in organizational processes.

Matti Hamalainen is a lecturer at the Espoo-Vantaa Institute of
Technology, Finland. He is currently on assignment in the United Kingdom and has been working with the British Open University, which specializes in collaborative distance education.
His recent research interests are collaborative distance education in
engineering.
