School of Architecture and Planning

The School of Architecture and Planning focuses on the study and design of the human environment -- architectural, urban and electronic. Graduates of the school pursue careers in architectural design and teaching; in planning for neighborhoods and cities and remote rural areas; in real estate development for the public and private sectors; in politics as elected officials; in communications as researchers and producers developing the potential of electronic media; and in the arts as filmmakers and graphic designers with the latest computer tools at their command.

The School of Architecture and Planning, under the direction of Dean William J. Mitchell, consists of six academic units--

Historically, the school builds on pioneering traditions: The first university instruction in architecture in the US began at MIT in 1865; The program in city planning was the second in the country when established in 1932; and the youngest of the School's programs, in Media Arts and Sciences, was established in 1987 as an outgrowth of the pioneering research being done at the Media Laboratory, which remains at the cutting edge of the field.
