Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh Internet Resources

This page is intended as a concise collection of starting points to exploring the Internet and World Wide Web resources. With the Internet's rate of change forever accelerating, this page cannot attempt to be comprehensive or even well-rounded. With luck, however, it should allow you to find the resources and information that are important to you.

You can also find out more about the books I've authored or co-authored, Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh, Internet Explorer Kit for Macintosh, and Internet Starter Kit for Windows., all published by Hayden Books.

WWW Catalogs & Directories

Yahoo
An immense hierarchical database of WWW and Internet resources maintained by David Filo and Jerry Yang. Vast and growing very quickly, Yahoo features categorical listings of resources, a comprehensive search feature, plus listings of what's new and popular in Yahoo. Yahoo is currently the preeminent Web reference tool.

EINet Galaxy
The EINet Galaxy is a categorical guide to Internet and WWW information and services, provided as a service to the net community by EINet. EINet Galaxy is organized topically and allows users to search through the Galaxy's pages.

Whole Internet Catalog
A smaller, selective collection of links to net resources built from the book The Whole Internet User's Guide & Catalog. Organized by topic.

What's New with NCSA Mosaic
Originally a central reference to see what was new on the Web, the What's New page is now a joint production of NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications) and O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. The What's New page attempts to serve as a clearinghouse for announcements of new Web services and significant changes to existing Web sites. These days, that's certainly an uphill battle.

Internet Resources Meta-Index
A loosely organized but fairly diverse listing of various Internet resource directories, indices, and information resources. Maintained by NCSA.

The WWW Virtual Library
A distributed subject catalog of reference and subject-specific material all over the World Wide Web, the Virtual Library can refer you to obscure, essential, and absolutely amazing things.

New Rider's World Wide Web Yellow Pages
Finally! This is where yellow-pages type of listing for Internet resources belongs - on the Web itself.

WWW Search Engines

W3 Search Engines
A single document that assembles some of the most useful WWW search tools on one place! Includes forms-based interfaces to Web search services, resource lists, software resources, people, publications, and more.

WebCrawler
A World Wide Web robot that operates by traversing (crawling) the Web and building an index as it goes, plus carrying out real-time queries based on some simple rules. WebCrawler indexes by a document's content, not just its title or URL, so its search can be very specific. Just ask WebCrawler what you're looking for and it'll tell you what it's seen. Designed by Brian Pinkerton at the University of Washington.

Lycos
Billing itself as "the" catalog of the Internet, Lycos is a Web explorer at Carnegie-Mellon University that investigates the WWW and builds indices of the titles, URLs, and filenames it finds. The Lycos search engine (called Pursuit) performs intelligent, probabilistic searches on the catalogs, attempting to provide you with results that are meaningful rather than numerous.

World Wide Web Worm (WWWW)
Designed by Oliver McBryan at the University of Colorado, WWWW is a worm that explores the Web and catalogs Web page titles, citations, and URLs in documents it encounters. Winner of the Best of the Web '94 Best Navigational Aid award.

ALIWEB
A public service provided by NEXOR, ALIWEB is a searchable, "participant-based" catalog of Web resources reported by ALIWEB participants. Since ALIWEB is based in the UK, you might want to try mirrors in Alabama or Indiana if you're in the U.S.

Internet Information & Services

Email Discussion Groups
The Internet sustains thousands of email discussion groups covering a huge variety of topics; use this resource to search for email discussion that interest you.

Stanford Netnews Filtering Service
You submit a profile of what sort of Usenet news you're interested in, and the Netnews Filter sends you email summaries of news postings matching your description! Great for following specialized topics or infrequent references.

Publicly-accessible WAIS Sources
WAIS, Inc. produces the software that makes a good portion of Internet database searching possible. Check out this listing of publicly-accessible WAIS databases (or a searchable version of it): you'll be surprised by the breadth and value of the information available via WAIS.

U.S. Internet Service Providers List
This extensive list contains hundreds of providers listed both by area code and alphabetically. An excellent resource for locating an Internet provider near you.

Providers of Commercial Internet Access (POCIA)
A public service of the Celestin Company, this directory lists commercial Internet providers in the U.S., Canada, and worldwide. Great for finding Internet providers in your area.

Software Archives & File Sites

Info-Mac Macintosh Archive
A major collection of Macintosh software and resources. This site is nearly always swamped; try mirrors at America Online instead. Also check out the Web-based Info-Mac HyperArchive at MIT.

UMich Macintosh Archive
Another major, although differently organized, collection of Macintosh software. This site is also nearly always swamped; try mirrors at America Online instead.

The Well-Connected Mac
The Well-Connected Mac site is perhaps the ultimate resource for Macintosh users on the World Wide Web. The Well-Connected Mac includes the Macintosh FAQ lists, vendor information, reviews of Macintosh products, links to Macintosh periodicals, lists of Macintosh mailing lists and newsgroups, and links to many other Web sites.

TidBITS
The TidBITS site at Dartmouth College - I include it here because, well, hey, it's my newsletter and I can do things like that. Aside from the articles, there are many links in each issue, making the experience of reading on the Web an expansive one.

Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh Modem Page
This page contains all the modem strings I've collected for the third edition of Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh, along with links to the vendors' sites when possible.

CICA Windows Archive
A major Internet FTP archive of Windows software, utilities, and resources. This site is often busy; if so, try its mirror site set up by America Online.

FAQ Archive
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) files are necessary staple of high-traffic Usenet newsgroups. Fortunately, FAQ files from major newsgroups have been collected to assist your assimilation into the Usenet community. If this site is busy, try the mirror at UUNet.
