What is Nethack?

From the FAQ:
NetHack is a single-user, fantasy role-playing computer game, and a direct descendant of the games Hack and Rogue. The "Net" in NetHack refers to its development by a team of programmers here in the USENET community.

Nethack itself is a very complex game, compared to ones such as Moria, Rogue, or Angband. There are several different classes, a larger variety of items (from keys to artifacts), a leaner, meaner collection of monsters, and several quests that a player must finish before winning the game. As opposed to the randomness that is found in the other games, Nethack tends to have set playing patterns that one must follow to win. There are also many new dungeon features as well as interesting things that a player can do.

Nethack Source

The full Nethack source code can obtained from ftp.uu.net under the /usenet/comp.sources.games directory [2948k].

Also, source is maintained at ftp://linc.cis.upenn.edu/pub/NH3.1/source/, but there are several tar'ed, Z'ed, and uu'ed parts to it, so it would be impossible to have all the links here. However, you may be interested in seeing what files are necessary for your system, as well as instructions for getting and using the files. Please note that the maintainers of this site would like you to avoid downloads between 9:00am and 6:00pm (EST) (2:00pm-11pm GMT).

Nethack Binaries

Nethack Variants/Utilities

ChrHack
ChrHack (v2.3) is a front end for Nethack on PC and compats that replaces the normal text graphics with bitmaps that are user-customizable. The program does not alter the NetHack executable in any way: it only adds a few lines to the nethack.cfg file, which can be commented out later if needed.
ChrHack is written by Mike Marcelais (mrmarcel@eos.ncsu.edu). He has written a separate Home Page for ChrHack.
ChrHack can be obtained at ftp.uml.edu:/msdos/Games/Utils/chrhac23.zip
NetHack+
NetHack+ is a modified version of Nethack, with additional classes/ monsters/items/etc.
NH+ can be found at ftp.win.tue.nl/pub/games/nethack/Variants/NhPlus/nhplus02.zip. Note that this is only the PC/DOS version; sources are available.
NetHack TNG
NetHack TNG is a modified version of Nethack with a nerd-ish twist to it.
Sources only are available at ftp.win.tue.nl/pub/games/nethack/Variants/NhTNG/nh313.tng.shar
