Grass for the Silverdome

The Silverdome World Cup soccer games on June 18, 22, 24 and 28 will be the first World Cup games ever played indoors -- thanks to the turfgrass developed by Michigan State University .

The science, sweat and savvy of Michigan State University turf researchers John N. "Trey" Rogers, James Crum and Paul Rieke combined with the vision and financing by the Michigan Host Committee have brought a historic event to the Pontiac Silverdome -- portable pitch.

Examining one of the grass hexagons

The MSU crop and soil science researchers said they could put a natural grass playing field -- as required by World Cup officials -- under the dome for a June 1993 exhibition game and the 1994 World Cup games. The exhibition game was an enormous success, winning rave reviews from officials and players alike.
