National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) stands at
the forefront of scientific research on a number of diseases that threaten
the survival and quality of life of millions of people. To accomplish its
goals, NIAID conducts a wide range of basic, applied, and clinical
investigations within its own laboratories and provides research grant,
contract, and cooperative agreement support to scientists at universities
and other research institutions.

Institute Overview
Program Divisions
NIAID maintains its strong commitment to basic research and to studies on infectious
and immunologic diseases within its mission by continuing to conduct and support work in the prevention
and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, asthma and allergies, and parasitic and fungal
diseases; diagnostics for infectious diseases; eveluation of antiviral drugs;
and transplantation immunology. NIAID also continues to provide support for
research on international health issues and in tropical medicine.
Selected Research Programs
NIAID-sponsored research programs are directed at preventing a broad
spectrum of infectious diseases as well as disorders of the immune system,
including allergic diseases. Intermediate goals of NIAID research scientists, until prevention is possible,
is to delineate pathogenesis and improve diagnosis and treatment of these diseases to reduce their
impact on public health.
Education Programs
National Research Service Awards.
The Congress of the United States established the National Research
Service Award (NRSA) Program in 1974 to "increase the capability of the
institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Alcohol,
Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration (ADAMHA) to carry out their
responsibility of maintaining a superior national program of research..."
(Public Law 93-348). One of the mechanisms established to ensure this goal
was direct training support of research scientists through NRSAs.
Minority Program Information
NIAID's mission encompasses research in the prevention of infectious diseases
and the management of allergic and immune system disorders. Many of these
diseases and disorders occur at disproportionately high rates in America's
ethnic minority populations. NIAID is committed to reducing these
disparities in health status through a variety of active research and
training activities.
