Welcome to the first WWW page devoted to Japanese New Age artist KITARO, one of the Living National Treasures of Japan (the highest award one can receive in Japan). His music is loved world wide by millions. We have created this page to serve you with information regarding KITARO, and his many impressive works. This page is now residing at a new, larger site that will allow us to add an array of sounds, images, and digitized film sequences.
While the Encyclopedia Britinnica describes him as "the quintessential musician of the new age", he feels otherwise. "Some people call my music New Age, but I don't agree" says Kitaro. "For me, New Age is more commercial, not spirtual or emotional. New Age music started in the middle of the 1980's. My music started in the middle of the 1970's. My music hasn't changed, but people have categorized it. It is just my music, my spiritual feelings put to music. But I don't mind, hopefully people will understand that this is Kitaro, and not just New Age. Most New Age doesn't get performed. For me, every artist should perform their music." No matter what you call it, what has always distinguished Kitaro's music has been its emotion.
One of the magical things about Kitaro is that he bridges new age, politics, religion, and the very core of culture. Kitaro will indeed be seen as one of the musical masters of the 20th century.
