EcoNet [ECONET INFO][econet@igc.apc.org]

EcoNet(tm) is the foremost online computer network linking people and organizations working for environmental sustainability. EcoNet, PeaceNet, ConflictNet and LaborNet computer networks together form the Institute for Global Communications (IGC), a non-profit umbrella organization that supports computer networking for progressive causes. The IGC networks' membership is comprised of individuals and organizations working for peace, human rights, socal justice and environmental sustainability.

EcoNet/IGC is a member of an international coalition of computer networks called the Association for Progressive Communications (APC). The APC has 18 wholly autonomous but affilliated partners in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, England, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, the Ukraine, and Uruguay. Additional "on demand " connections are made to the APC network from over 50 other locations ranging from Austria to Zimbabwe. With service to over 133 countries, APC is the only network to provide such extensive international connectivity.

EcoNet provides low-cost services for information sharing and distribution such as email, fax, telex, public and private conferences, databases, and gateways to most commercial and academic electronic mail services. More than 1200 IGC conferences cover virtually every environmental and human rghts topic. In addition EcoNet carries alternative news publications, newsletters, and a full set of USENET conferences.

EcoNet is 'on' the Internet and provides full internet services such as telnet, gopher, world wide web and ftp in addition to email. Users can access a cornucopia of information resources on the Internet, can send e-mail to people at other networks, and can log in remotely to or from any computer system on the Internet that allows it. EcoNet seeks to build coalitions and partnerships with activist and non-profit organizations to develop the use of the electronic communications medium. EcoNet provides subsidies and financial incentives to environmental organizations and committed individuals who foster the effectiveness of organizations through the use of electronic networking.
