RS/6000 and AIX hit the road

The N40 is no ordinary notebook computer. Its lightweight design and high-performance profile make it an ideal companion for your RS/6000 desktop workstation. On the road, at your hotel, or at home, the AIX applications you depend on are at your fingertips because this smallest member of the RS/6000 family exploits your AIX software applications. Designed for today's mobile professional, this unique portable workstation provides a rich set of standard features, such as a 340MB removable hard disk, a color TFT display, an internal 14.4 Kbps data/fax modem, and an integrated TrackPoint II pointing device. In addition, AIX for N40 Version 1.1 now includes Wabi 1.1, the Windows(tm) environment for UNIX that lets you use a number of popular Windows applications.

Enjoy the view

The N40's high resolution, 9.4-inch color, TFT active matrix screen offers easy, wide-angle viewing and support for 256 colors. The display's zoom and pan function enables you to maintain an entire 1280 x 1024 image in display memory, pan within it to view a 640 x 480 pixel image window in detail, and zoom out to display the entire image with less detail.

In addition, AIX for N40 now includes support for IBM's innovative Softgraphics feature that enables you to run 3D applications with a 2D graphics adapter. You can also attach portable projection displays and a wide range of conventional monitors.

Communications savvy

Today, communications are a key element in any technology solution. And with this notebook, your office is just a phone jack away. To keep you connected, the N40 takes advantage of advances in mobile computing with its built-in high speed data/fax modem, Ethernet, and ISDN support. Plus, it includes PCMCIA capability for Token Ring, additional PCMCIA features, and future wireless adapters.

Room for expansion

With an integrated speaker and microphone, the N40 is ready to run emerging multimedia applications, and you can turn up the sound by tapping into the two audio ports. The RS/6000 N40 also offers significant expansion options, including PCMCIA slots that can accommodate two Type I/II cards or one Type III card. While consuming very little power, these cards offer fast write response time and improved shock resistance. The N40 also includes serial and parallel ports. There's an integrated SCSI expansion port that enables attachment of SCSI storage and media devices, including a portable diskette drive (optional), an external CD-ROM, an R/W optical disk, and a wide range of hard disk drives. You can also attach Appletalk(tm) compatible printers. The optional external battery pack gives you up to four hours of untethered workstation performance.

AIX optimized for mobility

The N40 notebook workstation comes preinstalled with a mean and lean version of the AIX operating system based on AIX Version 3.2.5. It also provides a state-of-the-art windowing system that offers support for XWindow System Release 5 (X11R5). AIX for N40 Version 1.1 is intended for use as either a stand-alone or single-client operating system in a mobile computing environment. Software code, such as server functions, has been modified because the notebook is available only as a 1-2 user license. Storage and memory requirements are also reduced.

Wabi 1.1 for AIX is a new feature of the AIXwindows environment that allows customers to run many of the leading Windows personal productivity applications. The certified Wabi 1.1 applications install and run just as they would on an IBM-compatible PC running Windows 3.1.

Form, function, and flexibility

IBM understands the importance of elegant product design tailored to meet the needs of mobile users. That's why we've included the innovative Trackpoint II pointing device -- a unique eraser-size control built right into the keyboard between the G and the H keys. It allows you easy, ergonomic access to the cursor and eliminates the need for a mouse while traveling. Of course, once you return to your office, attaching a conventional keyboard and mouse is quick and easy.

The RS/6000 N40 also adds the Nomadic Computing Environment (NCE(tm)), which offers a fast-save and resume facility, power management, display zoom, portability tools, and automatic network configuration.

With its removable hard disk, this mobile workstation provides flexibility for users of the same system. Each user can have applications and data stored on a personal disk, making an investment in one system benefit an entire workgroup. These removable disks also offer added security and the ability to customize environments for different purposes.

Investment protection...absolutely!

As an extension to the RS/6000 family, the N40 notebook introduces a new level of mobile computing performance and expands the boundaries of productivity. Compatibility with AIX Version 3.2.5 means continuity and protection of the investments you've already made in AIX-based applications, mission-critical data, and your RS/6000 hardware. More important, it makes the most of your organization's investment in its people, their skills and their time. All this means that there is no better time to start taking advantage of the world's most powerful notebook computer.

World-class service and support

IBM stands behind every RS/6000 system sold with superior service and support to ensure the highest customer satisfaction. With IBM's commitment to technology leadership, unparalleled experience in delivering high-quality solutions, and open systems leadership, an investment in a RS/6000 is an investment in success.

All performance data was obtained in a specific environment and is presented "as is" for illustrative purposes only. Actual results may vary. Values shown here are the results of development-level systems. While these values should be indicative of generally- available systems, no warranties or guarantees are stated or implied by IBM. IBM recommends application-oriented testing for performance predictions and offers the above commonly reported benchmarks only as an initial indicator. Additional information on these tests is available from your IBM local Branch Office or IBM Authorized Reseller.

SPECint92: Geometric mean of six integer tests that comprise the CINT92 benchmark suite. All of these are written in C language. Baseline SPECfp92 results are included in the detailed results. SPECfp92: Geometric mean of 14 tests that represent the CFP92 benchmark suite. Five of the tests are single precision while the remaining nine are double precision. Two tests are written in C language, and the rest are written in FORTRAN. Basline SPECfp92 results are included in the detailed results.

The Xmark rating is a weighting of 532 tests executed in the X11 perf suite and is an indicator of 2D graphics performance in an X environment.
