The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics holds a unique position within the University of Vermont. Formed in 1986 through the fusion of two microbiology departments, one from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the other from the College of Medicine, the department's mandate was to provide an educational research focus in molecular genetics to support university-wide programs as well as those in both Colleges. The goal of the Department has been to establish a core group of scientists that would provide a hub for basic medical and agricultural researchers to interact with and provide a nucleus of faculty for current and expanding programs at the University. The Department supports, and is supported by, expertise in molecular biology in such departments as Biology, Botany, Biochemistry, Molecular Physiology/Biophysics, Pathology, and Pharmacology.
Since 1986 the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics has undergone a dramatic expansion with the addition of 12 new faculty members and the construction of a new research facility, Stafford Hall. The Department has grown to include 21 faculty, 6 adjunct faculty, 17 postdoctoral fellows, and 33 students - thus it offers the critical mass necessary for the pursuit of cutting edge science while maintaining close student-faculty interaction in an informal, stimulating atmosphere.
Applications for admission to the Graduate Program are reviewed on an individual basis. Students should have the equivalent of one year of biology, two years of chemistry including one year of organic , one year of physics, and mathematics through calculus. Students with good records who have not completed the undergraduate requirements may be permitted to make up any deficiencies early in the program. Scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations are required, and a subject test in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, biology or chemistry is optional.
