The InfoMarket server, provided by the Institute for Commercial Engineering (ICE), is arguably the best source of commercial information about Russia available on the Internet. Here you will find REDGAR (data on Russian securities), securities market laws, SKATE-PRESS ON-LINE, with financial and stocks new, quotes, market indices (in Russian), and informative gudies such as "Overview of the Russian Securities Market" and "Institutional Investors' Guide to Russia". There is much more, including a home page for the Russian Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange (RCRME).

The Department of Commerce announces CEEBICNet, the Central and Eastern Europe Business Information Center's Home Page. Information posted on CEEBICNet includes trade and investment regulations and incentives; economic and commercial overviews; best prospects for trade and investment; upcoming trade fairs, seminars, and conferences; lists of potential partners and customers; sources of financing and government assistance. In addition, the user can download a free business opportunity database, containing over 500 trade and investment leads.

The Central Library of the Budapest University of Economics has created ECONINFORM (R) (login: EGO) the three-language information system containing a bibliographic database of economic special literature and business information, developed on the basis of UNESCO CDS Micro ISIS 2.3 with the cooperation of MTA SZTAKI KFIIR-labor sponsored by the Information Infrastructure Development Programme. The user can choose to display information in German, Hungarian, or English.

The NATIONAL TRADE DATA BANK (US Dept. of Commerce) lets you delve into trade information from more than 20 federal agencies. Topics covered include export opportunities, foreign companies and importers looking for products, how-to-market guides and demographic, political and social-economic information about hundreds of countries, including FSU and EE. Two issues of a hypertext Russian business-law journal (in English) Rules And Regulations In Russia were published in 1994. Issue four contains articles about import and export duties, and government controls. Issue three has articles on investments, taxation, intellectual property, and commercial law. Brenden West, at the University of Washington's Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, has assembled a page of pointers to information about the new Russian economy. His Russian Economy Resource Center has sub-pages on


The German Development Institute undertakes consultancy and training activities on the basis of independent research. It conducts studies on development policy issues for public institutions in the Federal Republic of Germany and abroad and advises them on current aspects of cooperation between industrialized and developing countries. The GDI trains university graduates from the Federal Republic of Germany and other Member States of the European Union for professional service in public and private, German and international development cooperation agencies. Its archive houses its current working papers, such as Helmut Brandt's ALBANIA'S DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS BETWEEN LAND REFORM AND LARGE-SCALE PRIVATIZATION and information about the Institute.

Ian Kallen's Post-Soviet Study Resources on the Internet is a guide to Internet resources, with an up-to-date (March 1994) guide to listservs and good lists of Eastern European ftp and gopher sites. The resources covered here are especially useful for economic research.

A list of contact names and telephone numbers for US International Trade Administration Country Desks and Country Information Specialists contains names and phone numbers for East European and FSU specialists (as well as for the rest of the world) who are available for information about trade policy and business information in those areas.

BelCom, Inc. provides satellite-based private international communications for the oil, hotel and banking industries, and community telecommunications facilities in key business regions throughout the former Soviet Union. Since its founding in 1990, BelCom has provided the essential communications links for the largest multi-national ventures operating in the former Soviet Union.

CERRO, the Central European Regional Research Organization, located in Vienna, Austria, provides many economic, business, and marketing sources on its CERRO Gopher. Here one can find CERRO's statistic information service about Central Europe, The Regional Environmental Center Bulletin, Hungarian Electronic Stocks & Comodities (MET), International Marketing Insights, C&E Europe, as well as links to other Central European Gophers.

The University of Chicago's U of C Law School's Center for the Study of Constitutionalism in Eastern Europe was established in 1990 under the auspices of the Law School's Program in Law and Government. Drawing on resources from throughout the University, the Center will undertake a multi-year study of the constitution-making process in the post-Communist nations of Eastern and Central Europe, from the perspectives of political science, legal theory and the sociology of law. Their quarterly East European Constitutional Review is available on the University of Chicago gopher, as are theri Occasional Papers, and a very thorough set of files cataloging the Center's Archive Holdings.

NEW REASEARCH TEAM OFFERS FORECASTS OF EASTERN EUROPE -- ECONsult is a new forecasting service specializing in the "Little Tigers" of Eastern Europe, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary. The service is a partnership between PRiMeR, an international political risk analysis and market research firm, and AISA, a leading market research firm in Central Europe. The new forecasts will provide not only an analysis of economic sentiment, but also a quarterly report outlining public expectations of unemployment, inflation and saving. Projections will also be made about purchases of consumer durables and automobiles. ECONsult forecasts provide a sensitive measure, and timely analysis of changes in the most dynamic economies. Forecasting methods are strengthened because they measure both the willingness and the ability to purchase. Indicators of overall political satisfaction and satisfaction with government economic policies are also provided. Clients of the new service can include their specific strategic planning and marketing concerns in ECONsult surveys by purchasing proprietary questions for analysis. ECONsult reasearch adheres to the ESOMAR and WAPOR codes of social research conduct. Surveys are nationally representative and conducted by trained interviewers in respondents' homes. Surveys for the Czech Republic and Slovakia began in Sept. 1994. Lithuania and Estonia surveys will be completed in October, with Poland to follow in November. Inaugural issues will be available in early winter. Regular quarterly forecasts begin in 1995, with coverage of Hungary, Bulgaria and Latvia scheduled early in the year. The Department of Commerce's Economic Bulletin Board has many articles dealing with the developing Polish, Russian, and EE markets in its International Market Insights. Its Eastern Europe Trade Leads are current and valuable. The EBB also provides current information on the U.S. economy and trade, as well as other economic data.

Latvia has recently come online with new gopher and web sites. The Latvian Home Page is up, and the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science Gopher offers the following: News of Latvia contains reports of the News agency LETA with current events of Latvia in English as well as the up-to-date and thorough daily English-language reports of Baltic News Agency (BNS) and some issues of its English-language publication Baltic Business Weekly. The ICM Information System (login ICM) provides an index of mathematicians and of organisations employing professional mathematicians in Russia and in the states of the former USSR as well as information about publications and services available from the ICM.
