AAS Job Register - April 1995

Reaffirmation of Bona Fide Positions Statement

For the last ten years, the publication policy of the Job Register has required that advertisers submit an accompanying statement assuring that the vacancy is bona fide and the position has not been promised to anyone. It was recently called to our attention that two positions advertised in the Job Register were not true, open positions. This false advertising caused candidates to write research plans in vain and collectively generated 600 letters of reference. At the Tucson Meeting the AAS Council reaffirmed their stance: "The Council of the American Astronomical Society reaffirms its stance that advertisement in the Job Register must be true, open positions. Adversiters must submit an accompaying statement assuring that the vacanacy is bona fide and the position has not been promised to anyone before an ad will be pubished."
