Bristol to deliver OLE 2.0 on UNIX
Ridgefield, CT, September 26, 1994 - Bristol Technology
Inc. and Microsoft Corporation today announced an agreement in
which Microsoft licensed Microsoft® Windows° and Windows NT°
source code to Bristol under the Windows Interface Source
Environment (WISE) program. The agreement allows Bristol to
use the Microsoft technology to enhance Bristol's Wind/U®
portability toolkit. Bristol also announced that based on WISE, it
plans to deliver OLE 2.0, Microsoft's object technology, on the
UNIX® operating system later this year.
This agreement gives Bristol the right to incorporate and
distribute Windows technology, including the Microsoft Foundation
Class (MFC) Library and future technology from Windows95°
and NT 3.5, as part of its Wind/U portability toolkit. Terms of the
agreement were not disclosed.
Bristol's strategic decision to license WISE from Microsoft
will ensure compatibility and consistency to Wind/U customers.
Microsoft will provide Bristol with future versions of Windows
sources, thereby allowing Bristol to maximize compatibility and
performance for today's and tomorrow's 32-bit Windows-based
applications running on UNIX.
"The Microsoft relationship and license further enhances
Bristol's lead in providing Windows to UNIX cross-platform
solutions," said Keith Blackwell, Bristol's president. "Bristol plans
to be the first to deliver native OLE on UNIX, thereby creating
seamless portability for OLE-based applications."
"We welcome Bristol as a WISE licensee," said Bob
Kruger, Microsoft's director of strategic relations. "Because
Wind/U is WISE, developers using it will be able to leverage their
existing knowledge of Windows APIs to write a single code base
that is easily adaptable to run natively atop Windows or multiple
versions of UNIX."
Wind/U Customers Support the Signing of This Agreement
"The WISE agreement between Microsoft and Bristol
ensures that Wind/U will support future Microsoft technology,
including OLE and Windows 95," said Lynn Caruso, Powersoft's
director of product services. "This means that PowerBuilder
applications will be completely portable across Windows and UNIX
platforms."
"Rational Software Corporation uses Wind/U to deliver the
UNIX/Motif° version of our Windows 3.1 Rational Rose product,
and we look forward to Bristol's strong and timely support of all
the future Windows technology," said Dave Bernstein, Rational
Software Corporation's vice president of engineering. "The access
to future Windows source code will make Wind/U an even more
valuable tool for Windows API cross-platform development."
