Associated Western Universities, Inc. (AWU), a nonprofit corporation, is a consortium of 62 diverse colleges and universities. Since 1964, AWU has worked in partnership with government, industry, and academe to develop and administer a broad spectrum of science and engineering education programs. In 1994, with sponsorship of $21M, these programs provided scholarship, fellowship, or travel support for approximately 3,000 students and faculty from high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the U.S. As an integral component of their AWU awards, many of these current and future scientists and engineers participated in R&D activities at one of 50 or more non-academic laboratories, facilities, institutes, and centers.
