Information Networking Institute (INI)

The INI was established in 1989 by Carnegie Mellon University as the nation's first research and education center devoted to Information Networking. The Institute is concerned with the movement of information over public and private networks, to enable end users to conduct business and communicate interactively in multiple media -- voice, data, text, image and video. The Institute is closely affiliated with three colleges at Carnegie Mellon:

The Carnegie Institute of Technology (the college of engineering)
The Graduate School of Industrial Administration (the school of business)
The School of Computer Science.

More than 40 faculty from these colleges participate in the Institute's research and education programs. These include:

A Master's Degree in Information Networking. The MSIN is a unique 14-month alternative to the conventional one-year computer science or engineering program. It brings together the key technologies and techniques that underpin information networking from the schools of computer science, engineering, and business.

Professional Education Programs: The Institute offers customized mid-career programs for technical managers and selected senior executives which are designed to balance technology and strategy for the sponsoring corporations.
- The Advanced Technology Innovation (ATI) Program. This is a 14 week graduate level residential program designed as a career and life changing experience for technologists and technical managers. The program includes twenty-five major modules in computing, communications, management, and public policy.
- The Advanced Technology Overview (ATO) Program. This is a one-week presentation of topics in technology and strategy, designed to challenge participants' ideas about the business and organizational impact of emerging technologies.
- NET. This is a four-week detailed networking program, aimed at technologists who wish to master corporate network design, development, management, and operations.
- EXEC, an exceptional two-day executive training experience, is designed for senior technical management and is presented by four of the most thought provoking lecturers of the Institute. Topics include the imperatives in today's competitive environment, public policy, emerging technology, sustaining competitive advantage, and achieving peak performance during rapid change.
