Glossary of basic Internet services

By using TCP client software you can connect to other services on the Internet. Some of these client applications can be found in our Gopher site.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) clients like Fetch will allow you to copy files from FTP servers to your disk.
Gopher servers, accessable from Mosaic, can also be reached from applications (clients) like Gopher & Turbo Gopher. These sites are very much like FTP only much more efficient (faster). You might want to take a look at the Home of all Gophers.
Live Chatting with other people on the Interent can be done in a variety of ways on many types of services. IRC (Internet Relay Chat), Telnet, Homer, MUDDweller (for MUDs = Multi-User Discussions, Multi-User Dungeons, Multi-User Dimensions -- take your pick) are some of the clients to use for these. LambdaMOO is the most technically advanced, but there are thousands of other Muds out there each with their own theme.
Archie servers allow you to search files that reside in FTP sites. You can access Archie with Archie clients, Telnet, and via E-mail.
WAIS (Wide Area Information Servers) can be connected to by WAIS clients (or Telnet for the command line bound) and allow complex searches of massive data bases of documents and files from a wide variety of source.
CU SeeMe (Video Conferencing) can allow you, by use of one of the new cheap video digitizers / cameras to video conference with others. Cornell University CU-SeeMe FTP site is where to find the latest version of the software.

A good book on the Internet (book stores are full of these if you don't already have one) will provide additional documentation about these services and applications.
