The structure, composition, and evolution of solid-body planets, satellites, and small bodies throughout the Solar System provide important references for understanding the Earth. The Planetary Geosciences group explores the processes that shape planetary surfaces through analysis of features and their composition, geologic analogs, theoretical modeling and laboratory experiments. Planetary surfaces are collages of processes driven from below and above; consequently, constraints on surface processes through time also relate to the evolution of planetary interiors (e.g., nature of mantle convection) and the planetary environment in the broadest sense (from its atmosphere to its collisional history).
