UCSB has top-ranked programs in engineering and the sciences, as well as outstanding programs in the humanities, arts, and social sciences. Study in each of these areas is supported by many research centers and institutes, including the world-renowned Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Marine Science Institute.
UCSB's strong pre-med and pre-law programs do an excellent job preparing students for advanced study in medicine, pharmacology, government, law, and politics. During a recent five-year period, 72 percent of UCSB students who applied to medical school were accepted, compared with the national average of 55 percent, and 65 percent of UCSB students who applied to law school were admitted, compared with 56 perccnt nationwide.
At UCSB, you will study and live at a campus known for its location as well as its academic programs. UCSB's stunning setting between the mountains and the sea provides an ideal natural laboratory for teaching and research. The campus is bordered on three sides by the Pacific Ocean, and to the east by the Santa Ynez Mountains. The campus is located 100 miles north of Los Angeles near the city of Santa Barbara (population 75,000). More than 95 percent of UCSB freshmen come from outside the Santa Barbara area.
