UNAVCO - University NAVSTAR Consortium

The University NAVSTAR Consortium (UNAVCO) provides information, support, and scientific infrastructure to principal investigators making use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites for Earth science and related research. UNAVCO operates a facility that provides investigators with a standardized GPS equipment pool, assistance in planning and execution of high-accuracy GPS surveying projects, technical support, data analysis, and data archiving. Investigators assisted by UNAVCO are conducting research that is important to the nation and its citizens. Topics of study include earthquakes, volcanos, sea level, polar ice dynamics, weather forecasting, global climate, and natural resource exploration.

UNAVCO's charter was defined by its Steering Committee as follows: UNAVCO is a national program, governed by universities and funded by NSF to provide GPS equipment and technical support to university-based investigators in the geosciences and to pursue a research program that complements and enhances the programs of universities. The aim of UNAVCO is to extend the capabilities of the university community, nationally and internationally, to better understand the behavior of the Earth and the global environment, and to foster the transfer of knowledge and technology for the betterment of life on Earth.
