Amdahl A+Texture Overview

The Amdahl A+Texture products establish an information retrieval environment based on standard World-Wide Web technology, enhanced and tailored to large corporate networks.

Large Systems Environment

Amdahl brings to this environment its experience with large systems for large organizations. The A+Texture environment is architected to operate within a private corporate network to access hypermedia documents anywhere within the organization. At the same time, it has features to operate via a secure pass-thru mechanism on the organization's Internet firewall computer, allowing users to access documents anywhere on the global Internet as easily as documents on the organization's internal network.

Support

One important aspect of the package is support. Much of the World-Wide Web, until now, has been based on public domain or free software from literally dozens of sources at all points of the globe. It has flourished in an environment ideal for individuals and educational institutions. But corporations often find that free software is not free because of the time (and payroll) it takes to support it within the organization. If software isn't supported and maintained by a vendor, many organizations simply can't allocate the resources to do so internally.

A+Texture is supported so your system administrators have someone to turn to if assistance is needed. This makes World-Wide Web technology available to many organizations where it previously was not an option.

The A+Texture Access product price includes 30 days of support. Ongoing support is available separately.

SunSoft's Solaris 2.3 and Amdahl's A+ Enterprise Edition of Solaris on Sun Microsystems SPARC-based workstations and servers
SunOS 4.1 on SPARC-based workstations and servers

Online Documentation

There is online documentation about A+Texture on www.amdahl.com. This same documentation is also included on the product tape, for use in environments which are not connected to the Internet.

A+Texture Access

The A+Texture Access environment has the following features:

The navigator/client is a licensed and enhanced version of the extremely popular NCSA Mosaic software.
Multimedia viewers augment the navigator with the ability to handle external pictures, movie clips, and sound.
There is TCP/IP pass-thru software for operation on Internet firewalls so that A+Texture Access client software on the private network can access the Internet.
The server software is based on the standard HTTP (hypertext transport protocol.)
The product is supported by Amdahl. Support is available to system administrators at customer sites. As with all computer applications, end users should contact their system administrators if they have questions.
