This chapter provides information on the Cisco 7000 series routers. The information is organized into the following sections:
Product Overview
The Cisco 7000 series of multiprotocol routers combine Cisco Systems' proven
software technology with exceptional reliability, availability,
serviceability, and performance features to meet the requirements of today's
most mission-critical internetworks. The Cisco 7000 series provides
information system professionals with the flexibility they need to meet the
constantly changing requirements at the core and distribution points of the
internetwork. The Cisco 7000 series also provides a clear migration path to
tomorrow's technologies.
The newest member of the Cisco 7000 series, the Cisco 7010, enables the cost-effective deployment of Cisco's high-end routing technology in a compact package. And, as your internetworking requirements grow, you can physically scale up to the Cisco 7000 model, protecting investments in network interface and system processors.
The Cisco 7000 is Cisco's premier high-end platform, supporting more network interfaces and media types than any other Cisco platform. The Cisco 7000 also includes support for dual power supplies.
Network interfaces reside on modular interface processors, which provide a direct connection between the high-speed Cisco Extended Bus (CxBus) and the external network. Distributed processing is accomplished by the Route Processor (RP), Switch Processor (SP), and Silicon Switch Processor (SSP).
The Cisco 7000 runs the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco IOS), Cisco's industry-leading networking software. Cisco IOS assures robust, reliable internetworks by supporting both LAN and WAN protocols, optimizing WAN services, and controlling internetwork access. In addition, Cisco IOS allows centralized, integrated, and automated installation and management of internetworks.
The Cisco 7000 provides five slots for interface processors; the Cisco 7010 provides three slots for interface processors. Following are the interface processor types:
The reliability, availability, and serviceability features of the Cisco 7000 series include the following:
Allows you to implement dual sources of prime power. Each supply has its own power cord, eliminating the risks associated with failure of uninterruptable power supply systems or building power.

The software product number is SW-G7-10.2.x. The standard router software feature (FR-S7-10.2.X) license is included with the software product. Standard software is included with the system. x indicates a specific software version. Unless you specify otherwise, you will receive the default software version.
Options
Options include processors, interface processors, serial cables, software
features, memory, a second power supply (Cisco 7000 only), and accessories.
If a product number ends with an equal sign (=), the item can be ordered only as a spare. If a product number does not end with an equal sign, the item can be ordered as a spare or as a configurable part of a system order.
Processors
Replacement RPs, SPs, or SSPs can be ordered as spares. The product numbers
are RP=, SP=, and SSP=, respectively.
Interface Processors
Interface processors for the Cisco 7000 series are listed in Table 20.

Cable CAB-PCA-VA provides the physical connection to the IBM bus and tag cable. Cable CAB-PCA-VA is required and is a standard IBM cable. *6* ESCON = Enterprise Systems Connection.
TRIP
The TRIP provides two or four high-speed (4-Mbps or 16-Mbps) Token Ring
ports. Each port requires a MAU to connect the DB-9 connector to the external
Token Ring networks.
FIP
The FIP provides one high-speed (100-Mbps) FDDI port. Four types of FIPs are
available:
An HSSI cable is required for each HIP. The following table provides a
listing of Cisco 7000 HSSI cables. All cables are 10 feet (3 meters) long.
Table 21: Cisco 7000 Series HSSI Cables
HIP
The HIP provides one HSSI (up to 52-Mbps) port. This port allows you to
choose from a range of connectivity options, including Asynchronous Transfer
Mode (ATM), Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS), Frame Relay, or
private lines -- all at speeds up to DS3 or E3 (45 Mbps and 34 Mbps,
respectively). Only a software configuration is necessary to accommodate
these different network connections.

FSIP
The FSIP provides four or eight high-speed serial ports (up to 8 Mbps).
Each FSIP comes with a default dual-port adapter, PA-7KF-SPA, as follows:
For G.703/G.704 support, order optional port adapters PA-7KF-E1/120= or PA-7KF-E1/75=. The G.703/G.704 cables must match the ohm rating for the port adapters. For example, PA-7KF-EI/75, the 75-ohm port adapter, uses the G.703/G.704 75-ohm cable, CAB-E1-BNC.
Except for G.703/G.704 port adapters, the cable connected to the port determines the interface type and mode. The following table lists Cisco 7000 series serial cables supported by the FSIP.

AIP
The
AIP provides a connection for multiple Cisco routers, creating a
router cluster with advanced switching capabilities. The AIP provides
one ATM interface that supports the following connections:
The ATM cable connects to a Physical Layer Interface Module (PLIM) on the AIP card. The module supplies the interface type and can be ordered as a spare.
Table 23: Cisco 7000 MIP Cables
Each CIP can support up to two IBM mainframe channel connections, which can
be one of the following:
Options for the CIP are listed in Table 24.

MIP
Four models of the
MIP provide a multichannel multiplexer that allows
aggregate multiple channels at Nx64 and/or Nx56 on the same 1.5-Mbps T1
or 2-Mbps E1 line. Models CX-MIP-1CT1 and CX-MIP-2CT1 provide one or two
T1 ports, and models CX-MIP-1CE1 and CX-MIP-2CE1 provide one or two E1
ports. Two serial cables, null-modem and straight-through, are used with
the MIP. See the following table for cable product numbers.

When used with Cisco IOS dial-on-demand
routing software, the MIP can operate
as a single- or dual-port ISDN PRI device. A dual-port MIP card can be
configured to allow one port to operate as an ISDN PRI while the other
performs a multichannel multiplexer role.
CIP
The
CIP provides a connection to IBM or IBM-compatible mainframes. It
supports both IBM mainframe cabling standards: parallel channel (also called
bus and tag) and ESCON architecture. The host Cisco 7000 series router must
be running Cisco IOS Release 10.2 or higher.

Dual Power Supplies
The optional additional power supply system provides dual load-sharing for protection against system interruption in the event that one power supply system or one source of power fails. When ordered with the system, the part number is PWR-7000/2 for the redundant AC power supply. For a DC power supply, use product numbers PWR-7000-CD or PWR-7000/2-DC. Note that DC power supplies do not include a power cord.
When you order an AC power supply as a spare, choose the appropriate product numbers to specify the type of power cord to be included in the order. See the following table for the spare power supply product numbers.
