Amherst is the oldest and largest campus in the 5-campus system. With an enrollment of 17,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students, this major research university pumps $300 million a year into the area, in addition to $200 million in wages for faculty and staff. The 131-year-old campus also sponsors the Enterprise Development Initiative. Industry can also use UMass' new polymer and computer sciences center. The flagship of the state university system, the Amherst campus is located in the Pioneer Valley approximately 75 miles west of Boston.
A nationally recognized urban university with particular focus on the academic needs of urban populations and metropolitan regions, UMASS Boston sits on the shore of Boston Harbor. The campus is also linked to the state's Environmental Business Council, hoping to nurture what has been a growth industry. Established in 1964, the University enrolls 9,500 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students in its culturally diverse, non-traditional student body.
The smallest campus in enrollment - 5,200 undergraduate and 400 graduate students - UMASS Dartmouth has enviable student to faculty ratio and a full range of educational programs and student activities. Established in 1895, UMass Dartmouth has been working for several years to help area textile firms re-tool plants and re-educate workers for new and often computerized techniques. Dartmouth is located in the southeastern part of the state.
Located on the historic Merrimack River, UMASS Lowell's enrollment is 7,500 undergraduate and 2,500 graduate students. A particular focus of its educational program is economic development in the region. UMass Lowell has centers devoted to biotech and telecommunications.
The Worcester campus is a nationally recognized medical center. With 1,000 students, UMASS Worcester also operates a teaching hospital with the largest number of out-patients in the Worcester area. The Worcester Medical Center hopes to spin off a range of health and biotech advances.
