Religious institutions, texts, concepts, and activities constitute a
significant aspect of human culture. The academic field of Religious
Studies engages in a critical examination of these phenomena.
In spite of its small size, the Religious Studies department at the
University of Pennsylvania remains on the cutting edge of its
field. The Department is recognized for its emphasis on
methodology, that is, the critical examination of methods used
to study religious phenomena. The Department works in collaboration with
an interdepartmental Religious Studies Graduate Group. Both the
Department and the Graduate Group remain vital parts of the
School of Arts and Sciences.
