J. Feinstein's House O' Jazz

Hey -- this is Jon's House O' Jazz. Please excuse the name -- I know it's silly. This site, however, is serious. Last updated: 11/16/94

**IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ***

I have decided to disable all the album cover and sound sample links on this page, at least temporarily. This is because I am concerned about some of the legal issues surrounding this page. In the event that I do not secure legal rights to display some sound samples and album covers, I will convert this page into a new (and legal) jazz service. Please drop me a note using the forms interface below. I will seriously consider all notes regarding new ideas for this page. Thank you for your patience.

By the way, I am aware that this page was inaccessible for a couple of days recently. My host computer crashed, but everything seems ok... (I've got it all backed up, anyway)

COMING SOON

Stay tuned for... the WAJ (World of Amateur Jazz) homepage, in addition to a page detailing what Miles Davis thinks of... just about everyone (quotes from his book).

MY GOAL

The idea here is to provide a continually growing summary of my favorite jazz music, some of which you might have heard, and some of which you certainly won't have. The primary style of organization is by artist. Users may select any artist that interests them from the main list. What follows is a menu of albums, complete with cover art. I am including the cover art because I think that it is often influenced by the musicians and serves to better convey the artist's message. Even when the cover art is purely promotional, I still think that it is important because the listener (me) associates the artwork with the music. Selecting an album reveals the tracks on the album, a list of people appearing on the album (including their instruments), and any comments or recommendations which I felt like adding. Usually, at least one of the tracks is a link to an audio sample. These samples are usually about 20 - 30 seconds. While they certainly don't convey the entire contents of their respective albums, they serve to provide the listener with a general idea of the album's style. Also, any or all of the musicians listed may be links to further albums by that musician or other information which is available about them.

WHY BOTHER?

I am maintaining this list because I enjoy it. That's all. For me, music is a much better experience when it is shared than when it is enjoyed alone. I suspect most of you will agree. Of course... I am a student, so time won't always permit me to keep this growing. For this reason, I maintain a date at the top of this page which reflects when it was last updated.

OTHER LINKS ON THIS PAGE

You will also find a link to a page containing all my sound samples. This way, you can explore and then read up on artists that you like, rather than vice versa. I will also create the customary "other Jazz resources" link.

IDEA SUBMISSION FORM

Below you will find the idea submission form I mentioned at the top of this document. This is a hasty job of scripting, and, as a result, it does not work properly with many viewers, possibly including NCSA Mosaic and Lynx. For guarateed success, use the new Mosaic Netscape, available on the net. Please type in a note describing what you'd like to see in this space, and click "Submit". Vague concepts are quite welcome.

OLD LINKS

Each of the items below used to be a link to album cover art and sound samples. Please check back to see whether I am able to reactivate them. Thanks!

Artists:

You can also search through the above artists by sound samples.

NEW ADDITIONS

Announcing two new Count Basie album summaries! "Atomic" and "The Greatest" were generously donated by Daniel Zalik. Keep your eye out here for any new additions of his.

Other new stuff is on the way. To satisfy your jazz appetite, I've made it possible to view my work in progress. This link probably won't work between midnight and 9 AM. By the way, I'm also working to support NetScape.

MY OWN MUSIC

In case you've been wondering, I do in fact play an instrument -- trumpet. In the near future, I plan to provide you all with some samples of my playing right here. Check back Tuesday. I'm lead trumpet in the Swarthmore College Big Band, Principal in the College Orchestra, and 1st in a lot of other groups, too. I know that recordings exist of me playing with the California All-State High School Big Band and the Swat-tet, just to mention a few. Unfortunately, I'm yet to get my hands on some of these. Stay tuned.

OTHER SOURCES

There are many other good jazz resources on the net. For now, I'll direct you to WNUR-FM's jazz server until I get some time to make a complete list. You'll also find a pretty hip collection of stuff at The World of Jazz Improvisation
