Do You CD Light?
A Review of AsimCDFS 3.5
If you are thinking of joining the world of CD-ROM storage, multimedia,
and games, then this is a product worth looking into. AsimCDFS covers
about anything you would ever need from a filesystem and CD utilities for
the Amiga.
Of the advantages of the product:
1. Support- pick almost any CDROM drive and any SCSI controller, and
you will have a working drive. (This includes rewritable CDROM)
2. Ability to "rewrite" files to the hard disk buffer. This is
not mentioned in the manual, but I have been able to do it.
3. AsimTunes- One of the best audio CD players around, although
it is a bit ugly. It has an extensive library, and a
customizable screen (it can even be placed on custom screens or the
Workbench) Depending on your CD-ROM drive and your SCSI, you
can even output your audio through the Amiga.
4. PhotoCD and Corel Disk compatability. As I have not used photo
CD's, I will not review this feature. 8(
5. Mountable RAW sector
6. CDTV/CD32 emulation
Disadvantages (these are the problems that I personally have had)
1. Full support for CDROMS and SCSI cards. This is a hard task
and I commend the programmers for the long list of drives and SCSI
that they have supported. However, when I changed SCSI cards from a
Dataflyer to an Octagon, I lost support for CD32 games. This bugged
me because I needed an autobooting SCSI in order to play some CD32
games (Dataflyer is not autobooting).
2. A nicer interface for the AsimTunes utility. Asimware has
started to make it look better by replacing the "word" button for
eject with a "symbol" button, but what about the other buttons for
play/pause, stop, etc? Also, why doesn't fast forward work
with my CDROM drive (Sanyo CRD254S)?
In comparison to other CDROM filesystems... I have only used the CDFS for
the CD32/OS3.1... AsimCDFS is excellent. I hope that the programmers for
AT Gmbh take note when they integrate CDROM into the new OS.
