.mac Macintosh image file format. Used in the Macintosh MacPaint.
.mac Macro file format. Used as a macro file extension for a number of different applications.
.mag Magic file format. One of the formats in which Carafe can read and write circuit descriptions. Also the same format as the Berkeley Magic file format used by the layout editor, Magic.
.man Manual file format. Formatted text files used with Unix online manuals.
.map Map file format. A simple ASCII text format used with online image maps on the Web.
.mat Matrix file format. A matrix data file in which the matrix elements are mapped onto discrete levels which are represented as characters. These level are mapped to colors in the corresponding map file.
.mci Media Control Interface. High level programming interface for controlling multimedia devices.
.md Machine Description file format. A file containing instruction patterns for target machines.
.mdx Multiple Index File format. Native file format for a dBASE IV database multiple index file.
.mem Memory Index File format. Native file format for a dBASE database memory index file.
.mgf Materials and Geometry Format. ASCII-based 3D rendering format designed to model surface geometry and materials for the purpose of visible-light simulation and rendering.
.mic Microsoft Image Composer file format. Native format used to create images Web images in a user-friendly environment.
.mid, .midi Musical Instrument Digital Interface. A sound file format that allows transmiision of data between electronic music instruments.
.mng Multiple Network Graphics format. Proposed multiple-image extension of the .png (Portable Network Graphics) format.
.mny Microsoft Money format. Native file format used with Microsoft Money financial program.
.mod Modules. A sound file format that originated on the Amiga computer and migrated to the Web and various other platforms.
.mov Macintosh QuickTime Movie file format.
.mp2 Moving Pictures Expert Group 2 format. Similar to .mpg (see below), offering excellent sound quality (16 bit, CD sampling rate at most) in a compact, relatively quick-downloading file.
.mpa Mpeg Audio. See .mpg.
.mpg, .mpeg Moving Pictures Expert Group. A popular audio and video compression utility -- used regularly on the World Wide Web for full motion video.
.mps Input format originally introduced by IBM to express linear and integer programs in a standard way.
.mrb Multiple Resolution Bitmap format. Contains one or more .shg images, each rendered at a different resolution. These files are typically fed into an MRB compiler to create a single .mrb file. When WinHelp reads the .mrb file it chooses which bitmap most closely matches the resolution of the display.
.msp Microsoft Paint file format. Created by Microsoft for use in the Windows version 2.0 Paint program.
.mtm MultiTracker Module format. Music format supporting up to 32 channels.
