The Defense and Civil Systems Group is divided into the divisions Defense and Protection, Information and Communication Systems, Sensor Systems, as well as two profit centers in the fields of Waste Disposal and Logistics (in preparation). Defense systems, instrumental to security and peace, remain a core business of Daimler-Benz Aerospace in the changed security-political environment. This division is benefiting from the expertise gained in defense technology to develop and expand new technological areas for civilian products and systems. In addition, its business scope was restructured and adjusted to the altered framework of the German defense industry.
The Defense and Protection Division is an international partner and system leader in programs for guided missiles, drones, anti-aircraft systems, and dispenser systems for aircraft weaponry. At the same time, the civilian activities of the group have been increased.
With regard to already existing and future European cooperations, Dasa and Aerospatiale of France intend to establish a European joint venture to consolidate the activities of the two groups of companies in the field of guided missiles in order to maintain the necessary basic abilities in the area of modern defense technologies. Implementation and the creation of the respective structures are expected for 1995.
The Information and Communication Systems Division mainly develops and manufactures reconnaissance, surveillance, command and information systems, simulation and training systems, image processing systems, traffic planning systems as well as safety systems and civilian systems for environmental protection applications. A joint venture for modern telecommunications has been founded in 1995 with the Canadian company Northern Telecom.
The Sensor Systems Division is responsible for the development, production and integration of communication and radar systems as well as for electronic command and control systems (EloKa). This includes equipment and systems for civil radio monitoring, and for HF data and mm wave radio application. Strategic radio reconnaissance, tactical radio application and electronic radio command and control systems are also part of the division's business. For the purpose of strengthening market activities in the field of avionics, joint-ventures with equal shares for their partners have been founded together with the American company Rockwell/Collins and Aviapribor from Russia.
The product spectrum in the radar application sector comprises stationary and mobile radar equipment, airborne radar systems for military aircraft application, radar systems for air and sea surveillance tasks, microwave reconnaissance and electronic radar command and control systems. Air and sea traffic control systems make the production palette complete.
The profit center Disposal is concentrating upon the professional disposal of ammunition and electronic debris. A profit center Technical Support Services and Logistics, which is being set up, will focus on logistical and technical services.
