From: Greenpeace vessel MV Solo Date: SUN 26-FEB-95 12:10:41 GMT -- Day 4

Solo's position as of 0700 GMT is 260 km west of Cabo Finistere. The Pacific Pintail in bearing 203 deg 3.2 miles and our speed is 13.5 knots, course 215 degrees. The wind is a west force 6 and 10 meter waves are coming into the side of the ship. Everyone is hoping for a change in the weather. The whole crew is bruised from being knocked about the ship in all of our waking and sleeping hours.

A portuguese warship has just joined our party along with the Spanish navy ship already with us. The Portuguese ship contacted the Pintail to announce that it will follow it.

Continuing our current course and speed we will reach a point some 300 miles West of Lisbon (042 degrees and 26.5 minutes North and 012 degrees and 38.2 minutes West) on February 27 at around 0600 GMT.

Regards,

Bas Bruyne on board the MV Solo.

Date: SUN 26-FEB-95 -- 03:40 GMT -- Day 4

The Portuguese warship (Frigate F 489) the "Oliveira E Carmo" joined the Pintail at 0630 this morning and is still accompanying the ship, while the Spanish Navy patrol vessel "Serviola" left us at daybreak in the morning.

Yesterday we received a message from Monsanto Radio --a shipping radio station which issues navigational and security warnings to ships-- reporting the washing ashore of several (12) boxes of ammunition on the Portuguese Coast. Monsanto Radio warned all ships of the possibility of the existence of more boxes drifting in the ocean or ocean floor and said they could be dangerous to navigation.

We have learned that there are some 80 boxes of ammunition drifting around somewhere. The boxes of ammunition were lost at sea during an attempt on 25th October 1994 to scuttle (intentionally sink) the Portuguese ship "Sao Miguel" and its ammunition cargo. Reportedly the scuttling failed, the ship exploded, and some 80 boxes were lost. The Sao Miguel was sunk at approximately 190 miles West of Lisbon. The Pacific Pintail will on Monday February 27th in the early morning hours (around 0200) come as close as 140 miles North East of the spot where the ammunition boxes were reported lost. We have contacted the Pintail with this warning and information but they have not responded.

On Monday (02-27-95) 2400 GMT (if we maintain our current speed and course) we will reach and enter the 200 mile Portuguese EEZ around Madeira. There is, however, a small gap of some 60 miles between the two Portuguese EEZ's around the Azores and Madeira. We think it's likely that the Pintail will pass through this gap, thus avoiding a direct confrontation with Portugal over it's 200 mile EEZ.

That's all for now,

Bas Bruyne on board the MV Solo.
