Peche Interdite

jmack@pipeline.com

Adora and I brought our lunch -- French bread, smelly cheese and cheap red wine (what else?) -- to the Bois de Boulogne and, as we sat on a bench on a path near the Lac Inferieur, we noticed these two older men approaching. We watched incredulously as they fished around in the water and brought out two iron chairs to sit on. "What goes on here," I wondered? So, not knowing any French, but determined to photograph them, I engaged the man in the foreground in conversation.

I started out by trying to prove that I knew some French (Adora helped me with the phrasing): "Don't you see the 'no fishing' sign?" I said, pointing to the obvious "Peche Interdite" on the sign-post. He laughed and invited me to look on the other side of the post. It read "Limite de Peche." Well, he got me, but it opened him up and I got him -- on film!
