Baseball Drops Two to Hamline

Kelly Sullivan, Racquet Sports Editor article written 4-4-96

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's men's baseball team dropped a
pair of games against Hamline University at the Metrodome in Minneapolis on
Sunday night, 9-6, and 8-6.
Matt Goebel led the Eagles in the first game going two for two with a
walk. The team pounded out nine hits in the game, with three of those
coming int eh first inning.
They gave up three runs in the bottom of the first inning to give up
their lead and two more runs in the second.
In game two for the Eagles, UW-L rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take a
6-3 lead, only to allow Hamline to post five runs in the fourth inning to
record the sweep. Matt Roffers went 3-3 with three RBIs to lead the Eagles.
Goebel now leads the team with 20 hits, five doubles,a dn is tied for
the lead in total bases with 28. He upped his batting average for the
season to .435. His 88 career hits also places him 21st in school history.
Junior Jay Katzenmeyer proved to be quite a pest on the base paths
against Hamline. He swiped three bases in the opener and has now been
successful on seven of his eight attempts this season.
As a team the Eagles have converted on 15 of 24 stolen base attempts
for the season. UW-L swiped 43 bases last season in 55 attempts.
Katzenmeyer also snapped out of an early season funk by recording a pair of
hits against Hamline, including a triple which almost cleared the Metrodome
fence. He hit other balls hard, but they were right at defenders.
Five pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts in the second game against
Hamline. Senior hurler Jon Knez worked just one inning, but that was
enough to set a school record. He struck out four batters in one inning.
That record was possible because of a passed ball on a third strike which
allowed the batter to reach first.
Andy Hanson continued the mass of whiffs with five strikeouts in two
innings of work.
The Eagles will play at Winona State University on Saturday, April 6 at
1 p.m. La Crosse will play their hoe opener Saturday, April 13 against
Concordia-St.Paul at the Baseball Field at North Campus. The double-header
will start at 1 p.m.
