Baseball Team Finishes Strong Over Break
Kelly Sullivan, Racquet Sports Editor article written 3-28-96
The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's men's baseball team spent spring break in
California. In eleven games on the trip, the team came away with a record of 5-6. The
highlight of the trip for the team was going 3-1 in the All-California Tournament.
Baseball coach Mike Stuhr said, "I was real pleased with the way we ended the trip going
3-1 in the California Tournament. We struggled early, but we got better as the week went
on."
Junior Bill McClone was the star for the Eagles offensively over the spring break.
McClone cracked four home runs on the trip. He also led the team with 13 runs batted in
and a .750 slugging percentage.
Other players that performed well for the Eagles were Matt Goebel and Kelly Olson.
Goebel hit .415 on the trip with a team-high 17 base hits and five doubles. Goebel was
also selected to the All-California Tournament team. Olson hit .333 on the trip and scored
a team high eight runs. Olson was also selected to the All-California Tournament team.
Olson came up with the game winning hit in the bottom of the ninth in the Eagles 3-2 win
over Ponoma-Pitzer.
One of the major problems that UW-L had on the trip was giving up a number of free
passes. As a staff the UW-L pitchers gave up 54 walks and 16 hit batsmen in 86 innings.
This was 17 more free passes than UW-L's opponents who had nearly 20-25 games of experience
Stuhr knew that his young pitchers may have problems early, but he was happy with the
way they ended the week. "Pitching improved as the week went on." Stuhr said.
Leading the way for UW-L's pitchers was Cory Anderson. Anderson tossed his first career
complete game in a 3-2 win over Ponoma-Pitzer. Anderson also recorded two saves on the
trip in two wins over Mass.-Dartmouth. He finished the trip with a 3.28 earned run average.
Jeremy Brach and Ted Bauer also pitched well for the Eagles on the trip. Brach won one
game, and he gave up only one earned run in the five innings. Bauer also won one game, and
he gave up only two runs in eight and a third innings on the trip.
Jon Knez and Heath Walker also picked up wins for the Eagles on the trip.
The Eagles next game is this Sunday at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. against
Hamline University. The Eagles are scheduled to play a double-header that begins at 8:45
p.m.
