How to Create Your Web Site
    HTML background
Most pages on the World Wide Web are created in a standard document format known as Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML. The "Hypertext" in Hypertext Markup Language is the links that allow you to surf from one document to the next on the World Wide Web. All Web browsing tools like Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and Mosaic (to name a few), read HTML documents and allow you to browse these links. Not all browsing tools interpret HTML in the exact same way. This is why some pages look different in one browser than they do in another. It is important to keep this in mind when you are creating your web pages.

Though HTML is an excellent format for sharing documents online, it is not the only way. In some cases it is not even the best way to share your documents over the Internet or an Intranet. For example, many users want to share Word, Excel, and PowerPoint presentations online without having to convert them to HTML. That's why we created the Microsoft Office Family of Viewers, freely distributable no-charge applications which allow people to view and print Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. If you decide to publish in Word (.doc), Excel (.xls), or PowerPoint (.ppt) formats, it's a good idea to point users to the Viewers' download site http://www.microsoft.com/msoffice/.
