The Wellfleet Access Stack Node (ASN) from Bay Networks introduces an
innovative stackable router architecture that provides
cost-effective, growth-oriented solutions for remote, regional, and
departmental locations. The ASN is the first router designed to
provide seamless integration of multiple units stacked together for
management as a single router. This architecture makes managing a
growing internetwork easier because adding interfaces beyond a unit's
capacity does not require adding more routers - and complexity - to
the network's topology. A stack of four ASNs supports up to 24 network
interfaces and forwarding performance of up to 200,000 pps, providing
a superior path for growth.
The ASN easily integrates into the enterprise internetwork, supporting
all major LAN and WAN media and protocols. The ASN's LAN and WAN
interfaces (Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, Synchronous, and ISDN BRI)
meet the connectivity needs for remote and campus offices by offering
the modularity and flexibility to build configurations with
industry-leading price/performance. The Motorola 68040 processor in
the ASN's highly integrated design easily maintains high forwarding
and filtering rates, regardless of the number of protocols and network
interfaces used - even when processing SNMP management inquiries. The
ASN supports all major
network and bridging protocols, including DLSw for industry-standard
IBM integration. Using Synchronous interfaces for SDLC allows further
consolidation of IBM SNA and LAN traffic. For mission-critical
applications in remote offices, the ASN supports Dial Back-up and
Bandwidth-on-Demand. Uniform Traffic Filters, Traffic Prioritization,
and Data Compression optimize bandwidth and maximize traffic control.
The ASN's fault-resilient system software ensures high network
availability. Wellfleet EZ-Install, EZ-Configure, and EZ-Update simplify
ASN installation, configuration, and software maintenance. The ASN is
easily configured and monitored via Bay Networks Optivity/Internetwork, which
combines three applications - Site Manager, RouterMan, and PathMan -
to form a seamless integrated router management package for Wellfleet
routers.
The ASN complements the Wellfleet Access Node (AN), Backbone Link
Node (BLN), and Backbone Concentrator Node (BCN)
to satisfy all connectivity, performance, and
availability requirements ranging from cost-effective workgroup or
remote site access to high-performance, highly available network hubs.
The Wellfleet router family connects up to 52 network interfaces and
delivers aggregate system forwarding performance up to 760,000 pps.
