Gateway 2000 College Relations Program

What is the Gateway Internship Program?

The Gateway 2000 Internship Program provides "real" leading edge opportunities for students from a wide variety of disciplines. The purpose of our college internship program is to provide students the opportunity to work closely with Gateway professionals in a stimulating environment with exposure to tomorrow’s technology today. Upon completion of the eleven week program, full-time retention will be explored for those students who demonstrated a "good fit" into the Gateway environment; contingent upon graduation.

Through organized activities interns will be encouraged to network professionally and socially with the Gateway 2000 staff and other interns from across the United States. The networking provided will offer academic stimulation and professional insight that will prepare students for a successful career within our industry.

Here are some testimonials from the 1996 Summer Internship program:

Kerry Nilson, Industrial Engineering Coach, stated that his summer intern "will forget more information from the past eleven weeks, than she will learn in four years of undergraduate studies."

Michael Payne, General Engineering Intern from BYU, commented that "this was the first time he had ever worked on a project where the answers were not in the back of the book. He only hoped that he was awake and paying attention at that 8:00 a.m. lecture on Tuesdays and Thursdays."

Dave Chamberlain, Director of Gateway 2000 Major Accounts, Inc. Sales, said this about the six ’96 Gateway 2000 Major Accounts, Inc. interns, "They were invaluable!! The internship program allowed us to take a luxury resource (the interns) and apply these individuals to very important, long term projects. At times Gateway 2000 Major Accounts, Inc. does not have the resources and the expertise in some areas to apply to those long term projects."

Suzette Emmons, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, developed a cost model of what the portable evaluation units were really doing to our expense line.

Darren Henderson, Brigham Young University, worked on an interactive CD-ROM to be distributed to potential customers informing them on what Gateway 2000 is really about.

Projects of this nature may be long term and difficult. We were able to take the interns, place them on the projects, and get them completed in eleven weeks.

There was a real hole in the department when the interns left. There were other projects that Gateway 2000 Major Accounts, Inc. would have loved to have the interns work on but there was not enough time left in the internship program.

There are five or six major projects the interns completed this summer that Gateway 2000 Major Accounts, Inc. is still utilizing today because of their hard work and determination.

Toril Milbrath, an MBA Gateway 2000 Major Accounts, Inc. Sales intern from the University of Indiana, indicated the following: "I was surprised at just how much room they give you to work with a project. What I have found is: they tell you what they expect, what they are trying to achieve, and what their goals are, but then it is up to you to determine the best way to go about doing that."

What are the General Qualifications?

All participants for internships and co-ops must meet the following criteria:
    1. They must have completed their sophomore year undergraduate studies by the start of the program.
    2. Be actively pursuing a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
    3. Be in good academic standing. We interpret this qualification as having a preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. All grade point averages will be reviewed and an unofficial transcript will be required from top candidates in the final selection stages.
    4. The student should be actively involved in their campus or community environment. These traits demonstrate flexibility and good time management skills needed to succeed in the Gateway environment. (If a two page resume is needed in order to list all of our activities, not a problem. If fact, a two page resume with numerous activities listed is preferred to a shorter one page resume with no activities included.)
    5. Most opportunities will be offered at our Worldwide Corporate Headquarters in North Sioux City, SD. The standard summer internship program runs for eleven weeks from June 2 until August 15. Opportunities that run outside of this time frame, require additional time, or need the times changed due to school commitments will be reviewed on an individual basis by College Relations.
    6. We offer limited seasonal internships for local college students. Reference our web site and your career services to inquire about these openings.
