SFB 182 - Project B4 (Distributed Services and Distributed Data
in Computer Networks)
Note: Since February 1995, the
World Wide Web Server of the SFB182 is online. You can find
information about the whole SFB there. Unfortunately, the information
is provided in the German language.
Description
The acronym SFB stands for Sonderforschungsbereich (special research
project). The
SFB 182
is organized in some 15 sub-projects. The
B4
project "Distributed
Services and Distributed Data in Computer Networks" is one of them.
Goals and Results
As B4's project name implies, both questions of data management and
data distribution have to be answered. The basic data management
issues are somewhat clear at this point in the project term. In particular,
Non-Standard Database Systems (NDBMS) provide a number of convenient answers.
Extensions in the direction of multimedia databases may apply, however.
Data distribution issues are dealt with by B4's own Distrubuted Data
Management System DDMS. The DDMS behaves well under normal
circumstances, but in the case of failure additional services have to be
investigated. Furthermore, more sophisticated and distributed processing
paradigms like well-structured and unstructured cooperative work are
currently addressed.
